From Cardiff to Cairo: Arabic Rights for Two Parthian Titles

Alexandra Büchler from Literature Across Frontier recently met Cairo-based Al Arabi Publishers at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair to confirm the terms for World Arabic translation rights to both The Golden Orphans by Gary Raymond and Bad Ideas/Chemicals by Lloyd Markham  – straight from Wales to Eqypt. These are novels which we think deserve a global audience, and authors who share our determination to take Welsh literature across as many frontiers as we can. Alexandra also recently co-edited our anthology of new writing of European fiction (which includes a story by Lloyd Markham), Zero Hours on the Boulevard, Tales of Independence and Belonging
Gary Raymond commented,

“As a novelist, one of the thrills is seeing what happens to your book after publication, watching it go off and make friends and have a life of its own. I wrote The Golden Orphans with an international audience in mind, hoping the thrills and ideas in it would find many kinds of readers. So now for it to have this new trans-continental audience is one of the great pleasures of my writing career. As a writer, responses like this from unexpected quarters is a great feeling, but also it’s great that the faith and support shown in me as a novelist by Parthian continues to be repaid.”

Gary has also been invited to travel to Cairo in 2020 for the Arabic release of The Golden Orphans.

Lloyd Markham’s Bad Ideas/Chemicals was shortlisted for multiple prizes in 2018, and has this week won the New Welsh Review readers' poll for favourite dystopian novella. Its quirkiness has proven popular among its British audience, and we hope the same can be said as it travels overseas!

With the help of organisations like Literature Across Frontiers, The British Council and Wales Literature Exchange, Parthian is making more and more Welsh literature travel - not to mention the many books we ourselves are translating. We hope to keep building connections with other brilliant cultures – and to continue making exciting deals like this one!
