‘We’re trying to tell a story that is queer, that is Welsh, that is rural.’ – Bethan Marlow

A banging musical about an unremarkable teenager.

Commissioned and produced by National Theatre Wales, published here as an original play.

Expelled from school and not even able to get a job at the chippy, Jax (she/they/whatever) is a cocky, loveable teen living with her Nan in a tiny, boring village. When Jax meets Ffion, with her smart talk and loud looks, sparks fly. Queer teenage lust brings together this unlikely match in all its messy, clumsy and awesome glory.

Feral Monster follows Jax and her noisy, opinionated brain as they navigate love, identity, class and family.

Mashing up grime, R&B, soul, pop and rap, the soundtrack takes us from the high highs to low lows of the hormonal rollercoaster of adolescence.

First performed at Sherman Theatre in Cardiff in February 2024 before touring to Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Pontio in Bangor, Ffwrnes in Llanelli and Theatr Brycheiniog in Brecon.

The publication of the Feral Monster script is sponsored by the Principality Building Society.

Bethan Marlow (she/they) is an award- winning writer from north Wales.
Her highly acclaimed theatre credits include Pigeon (Theatr Iolo/Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru), Mold Riots (Theatr Clwyd) and NYRSYS (Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru). Bethan’s current theatre commissions are with Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru and Welsh National Opera.
Bethan is currently developing an original TV drama series for Five Acts, World Productions and Film Nation. She’s also working on two feel-good queer feature films: Madison with the BFI and IEIE Productions and Queer as Folk Dancing with Ffilm Cymru and Ardimages UK.
